Ageism impacts our health and or economy | Age in America | Jean Accius
"The fact that people are being marginalized, discriminated against, discounted solely because of their age actually costs our overall economy, which means that everyone is losing not just an older adult," says Jean Accius, president and CEO of CHC: Creating Healthier Communities.
Also, says Accius, there are people being hit by a triple whammy. "It's a triple whammy if you're an older adult, an older woman, and a person of color. This filtration is having detrimental impact on our overall economy but it's also having huge impact on our health and well-being both as individuals as well as as a society."
WorkingNation editor-in-chief Ramona Schindelheim interviewed Accius and 9 other leading...

The top 3 reasons you should hire an older worker | Age in America | Steven Lee
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.9 часов назад
As a society, there is a huge benefit to hiring midcareer and older workers. Steven Lee is the CEO of SkillUp Coalition. He calls out employers, urging them to hire these workers because it is good for the worker and good for the company. "One, they have a lot of skills and experience. Two, they are going to bring an attitude of hard work, team work, and appreciation," Lee says. And three, olde...
Reskilling older workers needs to be a priority | Age in America | Gary Officer
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.12 часов назад
The way we do our jobs continues to change. Technology in some form or another is part of almost every industry now, and we need to make certain that we keep older adults up-to-date in the skills needed for them to remain in or rejoin the workforce and thrive. "Older workers clearly are not getting equal access to the workforce," says Gary Officer, founder and CEO of CWI Labs. "Every month, the...
Age-segregation hurts people and the economy | Age in America | Eunice Lin Nichols
Просмотров 52616 часов назад
We are an age-diverse, yet age-segregated, country. Eunice Lin Nichols, co-CEO of the nonprofit CoGenerate, says that there are "shockingly few opportunities for the generations to come together in daily life." She says anytime there is this divide, we are "ripe for polarization. When generational divides show up in the workplace, it really fuels ageist stereotypes against old and young, it hur...

Working past retirement | Age in America | Catherine Collinson
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.19 часов назад
You're hearing about it a lot. People are working longer. 65 has been the "traditional" retirement age for many people over the past decades, but that has shifted. Catherine Collinson, president and CEO of Transamerica Institute says retirement has taken on an entirely different meaning for today's workers. "Workers are choosing to extend their working lives, many out of necessity, but often be...
The perception of older workers vs. the reality | Age in America | Mona Mourshed
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.День назад
Nearly 40% of the long-term unemployed in the country are midcareer or older workers and it becomes harder to find work once you hit the age of 50. "The reason is that many companies believe that if you are older, that you are less likely to be adept with technology, to learn new processes, to be able to move with change," says Mona Mourshed, founding global CEO of Generation. "And as a result,...
Age discrimination in the workplace | Age in America | Emily M. Dickens
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.День назад
Asking someone their age during a job interview is against the law and there are special protections in place for people over the age of 40. But, Emily M. Dickens, chief of staff and head of government affairs at SHRM, says age discrimination can show up in the workplace in subtle ways. Dickens encourages hiring managers to "lead with inclusivity. If you think about creating a workplace where e...
Ageism is not an acceptable "ism" | Age in America | Janine Vanderburg
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.День назад
Ageism is stereotypes. It's prejudice. It's outright discrimination. And it damages older workers in so many ways. So says Janine Vanderburg, co-founder of Changing the Narrative, a campaign to end ageism. "Ageism is treated somewhat more cavalierly, and I hate using that word. But it's almost that in the workplace, people feel like it's okay to just stop by your desk and say, 'so aren't you go...
Why you should hire an older worker | Age in America | Heather Tinsley-Fix
Просмотров 3 тыс.14 дней назад
Have you heard the term "durable skills"? Employers have, and most say it is a priority when it comes to hiring. These are skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. And older workers have them. Still, employers are missing out because of hiring bias against older adults. "It should be unacceptable to reject candidates based on age. I know that that sounds obvious, but you would be s...
Ageism damages older adults and our economy | Age in America | Paul Irving

At a time when employers are complaining they can't find enough workers to fill 8 million open jobs, we need to recognize and utilize the talents of older adults in the workforce, says Paul Irving, senior fellow at the Milken Institute and the founding chair of its Center for the Future of Aging. He also sits on the WorkingNation Advisory Board. Ageism is a real threat to older workers and Irvi...

I was a VP in large pharma company and left at 60 yrs old. Also an RN who ran multiple Emergency depts. OVERQUALIFIED for lesser sales roles. No one is interested in older workers. Retirement is boring and I really miss intense roles where you are required to make big calls. Never really thought this would happen but it is a fact

Age 50 has been the standard layoff age for decades, nothing has changed, we cost more, have more medical issues, not everyone has kept up with new technology, we cost the company too much. Used to be that retirement was after 20 years of work so companies like K-Mart used to lay off people at 19 years to avoid paying pensions. I made it to 56 before I was laid off. The key is to plan for age 50 retirement, made my first million the month I turned 50, @56 I made it to $1.55 million and was ready for early retirement as my career ended.

This is a serious issue in the workplace today. Had a close friend talk with me about how there were comments in his workplace about an older employee being obsolete rather than a valuable resource. The norms in our culture need to change regarding this.

Im a network engineer. I try not yo guve away my age in my CV but its hard when covering the depth of my experience. I was flown to an 8nterview and when i entered the room it was ibvious they didnt expect a senior. They were rude. I knew my chances were no goid so i rold the in no uncertain terms that you dont get someone with my experience right out of college, especially with a great work ethic..one think they asked me was hiw do you feel about taking direction from someone much younger than me. I told them if they had put that oerson in that position i would geve them all the necessary respect that comes with the oosition regardless of age, sex or race. Needless to say i was not iffered the position and tbh was glad wasn't

Awareness of CKD is highly important. When I informed my x manager at work in a Rotherham labour council children's home that I had to start dialysis within 2 weeks he made me walk through the home singing dead man walking and laughing. He got all the children and other staff to laugh at me before getting me in the office and threatening me with the sack and asking if I'm a liar. He then proceeded to phone me or my dialysis unit every dialysis session for 3 weeks demanding I prove I was on a machine or be sacked. I tried to make a complaint but was told ' you have had one dialysis session. You must be cured. Why do you need more dialysis and why can't you work full time. We have no qualified staff' Then more threats of being sacked if I didn't stop attending dialysis. Horrible horrible experience...

Shaon is very average at paying people too. Ask anyone that worked for him when he did that bowl game. Ask the Marine Corps. No seriously, call them and specifically ask how many complaints they got from his employees. Flat out told my our family that he "misappropriated over $1.8 million" when my nephew was invited to his game, which was AWFUL. Didn't pay the two guys that were the only reasons my nephew went to the game. Then, declared bankruptcy. I'm pretty sure that's his second bankruptcy, and this was over a decade ago. My brother was going to go beat the hell out of him at one of his camps a year later, but we calmed him down. Complete human excrement ladies and gentlemen.
